In the Dirt

To those of you buried in snow - I'm sorry to do another post on Spring arriving in the South! The same day we went on our walk - we headed to the local Feed & Seed to pick out our garden starts!

I enjoyed getting outside, cleaning out a few squares of our garden and planting with hopes of a bountiful harvest for our table! More onions and potatoes were planted over the weekend while initially onions and broccoli filled bare squares.

I know most of you are a long way away from planting your garden - what are you dreaming of planting this year?

I guess I can take my cue from you and head to the feed and seed this Saturday. You were so successful last year. Potatoes, onions, broccoli---can anything else be planted now that you know of?

My spirits just bottomed out this morning when I woke up to more snow falling. This post gives me hope that yes spring will come!

I am dreaming of planting green beans, tomatoes and cucumbers. I might even try potatoes this year.

We live in an apartment, and don't really have a yard or a place to garden. However, I am going to ask my landlord if I can put out some big potted plants along a cement wall in the back. I'd like to at least do tomatoes and cucumbers, and my grandfather suggested lettuce as well, so we'll see! I still have a couple of months to figure it out. ;)

Wow -- we are weeks away from planting even hardy plants that can tolerate the cold weather, and our garden patch is still snow covered. But I'm starting to think about the garden and hope to plant tomatoes, lettuce, beans, potatoes, squash, onions, carrots, and pumpkins. I wish I could grow broccoli and corn, but have not had success in the past. Happy gardening! :) Love you, Mom

Hi Monica,
even though we have snow here, I don't mind the spring post. I actually like it.
We are moving this year during the summertime, but if I was able to do my garden again this year I would do tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers. I also want to try my hand at strawberries. Anyone ever done that? is it hard?

hmmmm....it's in the 40s today adn 20s tonight in GA. Will your plants make it? I mean, I know they are more cool weather but we got so far behind that we decided to wait a bit. :( I'm ready for SPRING!

This year I want tomatoes and flowers, and that's it. Oh, and some herbs. I use a lot of basil in the summer. My husband might build some above ground flower beds for me, and if he does then I'll plant lettuces.

okay, I'm officially envious!! But I DO.GET.TO.PLANT. a garden this year!! No more fears of frosts in July or wondering if any of the tomatoes will ripen!!

I have no earthly idea as to what I will plant though. Maybe some onions, basil, a few tomatoes, and green beans! All those things which just did not grow well in Alaska!! I'm envisioning scarlet runner beans twining up the chain-link fence (still to be installed). Oh did I mention cucumbers! Ah sweet cool cucumbers and some lettuce!!

Enjoy your garden! I do love looking at the pictures of all your lovely starts! I can even smell the clean, pungent smell of freshly turned dirt! Ah...

I can't wait to start our garden Monica, nothing better then home grown tomatoes! I am a rookie at this gardening thing, but I plan to eek out my green thumb, and have a go at it. I wish you were here to give me some pointers. Green beans will surely be here too, as well as some squash, and broccoli, and perhaps some cucumbers. I was thinking about planting some gourds too, just for fun. Have you ever tried that?

I won't be able to plant until about May 15th or 20th. I CAN'T wait for garden fresh cucumbers, peppers, and tomatoes! I'm also planting broccoli, green beans, zuchinni, lettuce, potatoes, onions, radishes, sweet corn, pumpkins, watermelons, herbs, and millions of flowers!! Oh, I can't wait!!!

I'm looking forward to planting tomatoes and basil, as well as flowers like lots of colorful zinnias. Great for picking and bringing inside! I was a real bright spot to see your lovely garden pictures. It's pretty dreary up here in the northeast! God bless!

We too are getting our garden ready for planting (we do square foot gardening and are in the process of making a few more boxes!)
We live in Nor. Cali and the weather has been beautiful...a few more weeks and we can start planting some more veggies! Yay! Right now we kale, onions, arugula...that are in there producing in abundance!

I hope you will come visit my blog and check out that Lil Daisies is doing some giveaways in honor of Springtime! I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks Monica!

I am planning an all HEIRLOOM garden this year: Brandywine tomatoes, Blackseed simpson lettuce, amish paste tomatoes, and more...

alas, 6-8 inches (snow) in the forcast tonight....

Love that you do potatoes and onions- is that tough? The hilling kind of intimidates me. :) silly I know!

I just ordered my seeds this week. Remembering your beautiful zinnias from last summer, I got a package of them. I'm going to try starting them from seed inside and then put the plants out. Hoping for success! They will be so pretty!

I'll also do tomatoes, peppers, green beans, zucchini and cucumbers. Probably some basil and lettuces.

Exciting!
