Bread of Life

After watching this amazing video {via Farm Chicks Facebook page}, I could not wait to make bread. One of my favorite lunches is homemade bread with butter and honey, sliced co-jack cheese, fruit and maybe even some egg salad!

I tried the basic recipe from Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a Day - it was very easy and quite yummy {though I will reduce the salt next time!}

Homemade bread is the epitome of simple, pure and lovely!

John 6:35, "Then Jesus declared, 'I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.'"

Your bread looks beautiful, Mo! I checked out that book from the library last fall, and just wasn't in the mood to tackle trying it.

Someone graciously made us a lovely loaf of homemade bread earlier this week. I toasted some last night to serve with potato soup--delicious!

I know I've seen a grain mill in some of your pictures before. So I'm wondering if you used all purpose flour from the store, or if you milled some for this recipe. If you did mill some, what kind did you use - hard white? Thank you for sharing the video - it was cool to watch.

Mmmmm -- I imagine that your home smelled wonderful while this bread was baking! :) Love you, Mom

I think this means your house is back in order.

HeatherMavis: Ah, no - but I did make bread anyway last week!

CheleLaw: Yes, I do have a NutriMill and for this I milled hard white wheat. I buy hard white and soft white - for baking I use a mixture (2/3 hard and 1/3 white) and for pretty much every thing else, I use hard.

Dare I admit that I've never baked a loaf of bread that required rising? I fear that I would eat it ALL before my family got a chance to enjoy!
But there is nothing better than freshly baked bread.

I tried this a couple of weeks/months ago and while it rose at first it didn't after that and I had 3 really dense loaves of bread. I think I'll try again. I love the thought of fresh bread!

I've been wanting to try the recipes in that book for a while. Right now I use my bread machine set on the dough cycle, then transfer the dough into baking pans & bake in the oven. I've never liked how the bread machine bakes, turns out much better baked in the oven. Your bread looks so beautiful!
