Homemade Bagels

I recently got a new recipe booklet from the co-op where I get my wheat for grinding and other bread supplies. Glancing through the book, I saw the recipe for bagels and thought that would be a great recipe to try.

I was disappointed at how quickly they browned on the bottom, but that may have been my fault for putting them in the oven while it was still pre-heating. But that was easy to slice off and didn't affect the taste! The recipe is very similar to this one - with honey added to the water that the bagels are boiled in.

These were not amazing - they were ok though I would like to try bagels again. I'm trying to come up with some different breakfast options and hoped these would be really tasty. If you have a great recipe - I'd love to give it a try!

I'm looking for a bagel recipe, also. I made them for a while at a little Bagel shop before I became a mom and I miss them! It's just not frugal to buy one of those little bags of bagels at the store b/c there are so many of us, so if you find one, please share. Thanks!

I live in an area where we have wonderful bagel shops. I know I could never improve on them so I don't even try.

I love bagels! We're far enough from any kind of bagel shop that it's just not possible to get hot, fresh bagels for breakfast unless I make them.
I've used this recipe from allrecipes.com several times. Sometimes I refrigerate the dough overnight and then do the boiling/baking in the morning. I think the recipe yeilds nine bagels, but then they're really small. I usually make it into seven or eight bagels.

Try using a stone or a silicone mat on your baking pan. It keeps the bottoms of things from browning :) Have a great day!

You are more adventurous than myself, I'm thinking. Do you think that grinding your own wheat and doing what you do might have less carbs than using store bought?? I'm not sure if it makes sense or not, but I was curious if I could make our favorite recipes better for us{Lilly}.

Do you have a bread machine? I tried a recipe in one that I liked a while back but have not taken the time to do again. Let me know if you want the recipe.

Blessings, Lisa

I use this bread machine recipe for bagels. My husband's comment after the first batch was, "Guess we won't be buying bagels anymore!" lol

I do have a really great recipe, but you'll have to give me a few days to find it....we just got back to Indo and it's buried somewhere!! Remind me if I haven't sent it to you in the next few days!!

If I understood your post correctly you added honey to the water. If in fact you did this would have made the bagels brown faster and darker. Honey will always cause your baked goods to over brown easily if not watched carefully.

I haven't tried them, but they've been on the back burner of my "to try some day" list.

I will be watching your blog to see if you come up with a recipe that's really "wow" for you.

At church last night, a friend whose family owns a bagel shop gave me a bag of bagels left over from the day. I still consider them fresh and FREE can't be beat. This morning, warmed in the toaster, and spread with cream cheese. Nothing better! When my parents come to visit us, my father's first stop the next morning is for bagels for all to enjoy.
