Doughnuts!

After seeing a scrumptious looking doughnut recipe in a recent Taste of Home - I knew I wanted to make them! And, a fun treat for Valentine's weekend seemed like a perfect time to try them!

Since Valentine's Day was on Sunday and I knew these would be time consuming to finish before church, I decided to make them for Saturday morning hoping for enough leftover for Sunday too!

I made the dough on Friday night and put it in the fridge overnight. I rolled over to look at the clock at 5 a.m. so I hopped up to set the dough out. Even after 6 when I got up, the dough was still quite cold and I was beginning to wonder if these would turn out.

But, while I was rolling them out - I turned my oven on to the lowest temperature (170) and let it preheat. Then when the doughnuts were all rising on cookie sheets - I turned the oven off and put the cookie sheets inside to help them rise more. It worked!

Yes, these were time consuming - but they were also delicious! And, a special treat! I'd never made yeast doughnuts from scratch before! These tasted a bit different than "store-bought" since I'd used freshly milled flour (half hard white and half soft white) - but delicious just the same!

I do not have a 3 inch doughnut cutter - so I used a plastic food storage container. I measured a bunch of things in my kitchen and 3 1/2 inches was the closest I could get - so my doughnuts are big! Then, I used a mini heart cookie cutter to cuten them up!

I was really hoping that they would taste as good the next day so that I could make them ahead next time, but they are best fresh! They were good the next day but not as good as they had been the first morning!

I'd love to post the recipe - but I see on the Taste of Home website that in order to view this recipe you have to be a subscriber and log in - so I don't feel right about posting it here. I also searched online to find a similar recipe - but they all varied quite a bit from the one I used.

So, if you would like to try this recipe - please e-mail me and I will share it with you! Homemade Doughnuts were a yummy treat for us this weekend! Did you try any new recipes this weekend?

I saw that recipe too, and as the last batch of homemade doughnuts I tried was only *okay*, I have been a little leery. I'll try these out this weekend!

Where I live in Pennsylvania, Mardi Gras or Shrove Tuesday is called Donut Day. It's observed with a local tradition of fried donuts called faschnacts that are available only at this time of year.

Those look fantastic. I have always wantted to make yeast donuts from scratch. The time issue has always stopped me. Those made from biscuits are okay, but not the same as a yeast donut.

I would definately LOVE this recipe! WE often succomb to the donut store on the way to church, but would like to find a more healthful way to present this favorite treat to my family, with the peace of mind of knowing what is in them!

I made oreo truffles and pink grapefruit gumdrops! Both recipes were new for me, but I had eaten oreo truffles at a couple of other events. I left the treats at my parents house, for we are trying to stick to our diets!!

Mmm homemade donuts would be a great treat for Fat Tuesday! Here in Connecticut, the stores sell paczkis (pronounced punch-kees) which are like jelly donuts, for Mardi Gras! I won't have time to make homemade donuts, but if the snow lets up, I'll pick some up on our errands. :)

I can't guarantee they are the same, but they look similar.

I'm glad they worked out for you!

Sounds delicious. I tried a new ww bread recipe from a Sue Gregg cookbook. Delicous, but way too time consuming for me to do on a regular basis. I'll stick to my tried and true recipe that mixes in the bread machine and cooks in the oven. Yummy.
I'd like the doughnut recipe,too.
kkovach@sc.rr.com Thanks.

I would really like to try these doughnuts. I'm not sure where to email you at? Mine is 4sweetsisters@gmail.com.
If you have a spare moment that would be great.
Your tea party looked wonderful. It's so neat when things fall together like that. Good idea with the milk!

Thanks for the idea on the PW recipe, however I compared them and there were a number of differences, so I'll just share this recipe with those who are interested.

My e-mail address is in the left side bar of my blog with the vintage looking postcard!

I would love to try this recipe! Please e-mail the recipe to me when you get a chance (I think you're going to be busy e-mailing this recipe!) I just stopped subscribing to Taste of Home this year, but I still love to look at the early issues. I made "real" truffles. Some were caramel chocolate. I had to burn sugar for them and I'm getting really good at that so they were fun to make. I got the recipe at Heavenly Homemakers.

Perfect timing on this post- like Julie said, here in PA we do the faschnacts.
Now that we are vegan- I'm wandering if there is a vegan doughnut recipe?!?

The pictures made me hungry for doughnuts now! :)

Those look very yummy. Fun idea to use a heart cookie cutter!

Rachel: I've had good success using a flax seed/water substitute for eggs. If you had a milk substitute that would take care of it - maybe coconut milk?

I made homemade rolls for the first time! I whipped up the dough in my bread machine and then put them on a pan to rise for 15 min....they were perfection! I was so proud of them...melted in my mouth and were light and fluffy!!!

These look great! I saw them in TOH, too. My mom gives me a subscription every year for Christmas. So fun! I haven't made donuts in years and years. Since fresh donuts don't usually keep that well, I'll need to make them when we can share them with friends or family. Even though, I could probably polish off a whole bunch of them at one setting!

I sometimes use a glass for a round cutter; good idea to use something you had around the house!

I didn't try any new recipes last weekend but I did make Valentine's sugar cookies and revamped the recipe to make it healthy. They were ok but not great! I think I'll keep cut-out cookies as a rare treat that's made with refined ingredients, thank you very much!:-)

I made doughnuts yesterday (for Faschnut Day!- Feb. 16th). I will be sharing my recipes later - maybe tomorrow.

So Good!!!!!!!!! Your's are really pretty with the heart in the center. I also had a really small doughnut cutter. I would love a larger one, so that they're bigger. Next time, I'll have to try your trick.

I tore out that page from the magazine to keep to make later. But I was a little hesitant since I've never made doughnuts, either. I'm glad you tried them! You gave me some inspiration! It's on my list to try this week!

The heart cut outs are adorable!!
