Katy No-Pocket

Last week, we took advantage of the wonderful library here in Colorado and read Katy No-Pocket. This book was so fun and the ladies really enjoyed it!

In addition to talking about many parts of the book, I made aprons for the girls like mentioned in the book. Rachel calls hers her, "Katy apron!" I raided my moms fabric stash and came up with these:
Wearing the aprons and hopping like a kangaroo!

Visiting the zoo! We didn't see a kangaroo - but lots of the other animals mentioned - and we saw a wallabie instead and saw how they hopped. Rachel - please forgive me - I didn't get a single picture of you at the zoo!
We did tree rubbings and at the end of the week, found our own copy of the book at a thrift store for fifteen cents!

My brother and sister in law were living at the AFAcademy...just retired...anyway...they have twin girls and take them to this zoo often...I love it too. I go every time I visit. My favorite is the giraffe exhibit where you can feed them crackers. GREAT ZOO! Walking up the steep inclines is killer though.

We did Katy No Pocket last year (we use Before Five in a Row), and I made pocket aprons for my girls, too. Mine didn't turn out as nicely as yours, but they had tons of fun with them!

Rachel looks so happy hopping around! Megan has her first trip to the library planned on Friday. She loves to browse the bookstore so I know she is going to love it! I am going to look for this book.

I love the zoo! I wish we had one in our area. I can't wait to visit STL and take Jane to see the animals - the STL zoo is fantastic! I saw a little snippet of Rachel with a purple hood behind Emily...:)

That is so funny we read the same book in the same week. My husband and I had a different reaction.... we looked at it too logically. I am so happy you all had fun with it! your grils in a the "Katy Aprons" look so cute! You should get a picture of them with their stuffed animals in their pockets :D.

Next you should try "The Great Escape from the City Zoo" About an Elephant, Anteater, Flamingo, and a Turtle. We read that one this week too.. I love it!

How funny! We just read that book last night. I have a 7 yr old girl and an almost 5 yr old boy and it's challenging to find books to read to them both since she is a failry advanced reader. My older child read this to us last night. Since my kids are a little older I decided to turn this into a science teaching moment and we talked about how if Katy really didn't have a pocket then her joey couldn't have been born, since baby kargaroos are born right into their mama's pocket and grow there. My kids were fascinated by the whole concept and wanted to know more. It moved off into a discussion of what a mammal is etc.

I love when I get the spark of learning going.

I recognize several of those swatches as Nathan's quilt fabric! =)

Glad you had a fun outing. It's snowing here today--thinking of you!

I was excited to see this post. I ordered this book on my on line library holds but haven't gotten it yet. Now I can't wait. Maybe I should do tool belt style aprons for boys...LOL. Any other boyish ideas?
Also wondered how you did the tree rubbings? Sounds neat-o. I love your ideas and they are always the kind that inspire more ideas. Thank you Monica. Blessing dear woman of faith. Smiles, Angie in TX

We loved Katy No-Pocket, too! I made those same aprons, only a friend had suggested adapting a hand towel and that made it nice and quick for me. We did the book a few months ago, and the kids still get out the aprons regularly to hope around - they love them.
You might like to show your girls this song on you tube, of a little girl lost in the bush who ends up being helped (and having a ride in the pouch of) a read kangaroo:

Monica,

You’re such a good mom; I love reading your blog! Your children are blessed to have you.

What fun aprons, and what adorable girls! Oh, how I miss my little people and our homeschooling days—makes me almost want to cry some days.

Maybe you have heard me mention the Duggars. If you haven’t, visit their website

What an outstanding Christian homeschooling family of 20 they are! I love them!

Katy No Pocket was my favorite book as a child. I found a hardcover copy a few years ago and bought it for myself. It is nice to see it is still a favorite today!

Those are such cute aprons! I'm sure all little girls would love to have ones like those!

I love going to the zoo, it is so much fun, even though I don't have children yet.

The tree rubbings - were simply pieces of paper and crayons to rub the bark design on the paper. We did every tree in my parents back yard and they all turned out looking pretty much the same, so not sure how much they learned from this exercise - though it was fun to do it! :)
