Windowsill Herb Garden

I seem to be an eternal optimist when it comes to gardening! I've wanted to do more with fresh herbs and was inspired to make it a reality over the weekend. I bought the plants but everything else was on hand - the zinc box was a gift from my Mom and I'd been using it to store essential oils but thought it would be perfect for this use!

The candle pedestal was from our wedding and my sister gave me the enamel cup for Christmas!

I love this post on ideas for preserving herbs for use later but am also eager to hear your ideas for using fresh herbs - we won't have any trouble using the mint, we can never get enough in this house!

Herbs I planted are: rosemary, thyme, basil, parsley, mint and oregano. I'm thinking maybe fresh homemade bread with herbs in it and/or pesto on the side!

Also, do you any of you grow herbs indoors or do you find outdoors is better? I'm all ears!

P.S. Later I added a cute tag with Scripture to the thyme!

I'm not a very good gardener, but we once had a basil plant on our lanai that grew and grew and grew! I love using fresh herbs: basil can go with mozzarella cheese (the wet ball kind, not the dry square kind... how's that for technical? ;)) and tomatoes, then drizzle with a little balsamic vinegar. Put rosemary in and on a roasted chicken. Thyme is so yummy when added to chicken or turkey soup. We actually don't use mint at all; I've never been a big fan and I never really thought to grow or buy it.

Your herb container is adorable! I have grown them in the windowsill and had great success. I like to use thyme to make a tea with honey for coughs. It is a little strong, but I found it to be very effective.

So cute! I grow my herbs like rosemary and basil outside, I love your big window ! I use alot of both herbs in lots of recipes, and have made my own pesto which is delicious! Rosemary and basil can be used in Italian dishes, and chicken. Homemade bread sounds great too! Love the planters! :) Christina

Monica, beware of the Rosemary indoors! It is a hardy plant. I have had two HUGE bushes out front for about five years; they have never died. I will take a pic and send you later

Your herbs look wonderful. My husband got me an Aero Garden for Christmas. I am in week 7 of it and growing parsley, cilantro, dill, mint and a tomato plant. I'm over on Instagram at Embroidery_It if you want to see pictures. I actually have blooms on the tomato plant now. For me this is great because it is snowing up here in Michigan.
Blessings,
Nancy

Oh gosh! I love that! We don't have any proper windowsills in our house that I can set pots of flowers or herbs on. If I did, I would do this! I just grow a lot in the summer and dry them to use throughout the winter, but fresh is so good!

I've grown herbs outdoors in pots and mint on the ground (so prolific!). Now I have a basil plant indoors because Trader joes didn't have fresh cut basil. But I just thought about the fact that I could probably take it outside. I'm in a learning curve for new climate. I'm thinking of getting thyme to plant outside as I've seen it flourish in the area. I used fresh herbs in place of dried. Basil for caprese salad. Rosemary for pork. Actually, any herb can be cut up and put into a salad, as long as you like the flavor. I love cilantro in salad.

I had already been planning to plant some herbs in the spring. I have grown lavender which is my favorite to dry and then use in potpourri. Dill is a big one we would use. Your pots and the set up is adorable.
