Slow Day: The Non-Slow Version

A couple of weeks ago, we had a crazy week - every day was super busy with to-do's and to-go's and it was really just survival mode.

I came home Thursday evening and we were leaving the next morning for Colorado and I'd done absolutely nothing to prepare. We had some fresh veggies we needed to eat before leaving town and I was making roasted oven potatoes and carrots and a big cast iron skillet of stir fry green beans and onions. Mmmm.

Anyway, while standing at the stove stirring, I realized how little beauty I had found that week and that I had not picked my camera up once. I had a very clear thought - hurry and busy are the enemy of slow and chasing after beauty. It is impossible for all of those things to coexist peacefully.

I'm just admitting right now, there was no Slow Day that week and yes, that is how life is sometimes. But, we do pay a price for this kind of hustle bustle. I felt like some sort of machine just trying to get through the day, be friendly, serve some kind of meal and fall into bed to repeat the next day. My heart and soul were made for so much more, friends. Can you relate?

I love this song and it ties in with the above - so I'll leave you with this:

“Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on teh grass under the trees on a summer’s day, listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time."

John Lubbock, a writer from England 1860’s

I know exactly what your talking about. We live in a society that appreciates quantity not quality, manufactured and not hand-made. I think it has a lot to do with industry, make it quick, cheap and fast which overflows into the mindset of the family. We really have to work hard to leave that worldly way behind. We have gotten so far away from the arts and crafts from bartering etc. that we rush around chasing our tails.

I can so relate. When things get choatic, I crave slow. Those busy times enable us to see how precious slowing down us.
