These slow day posts continue to be captivating for me. I'm (slowly) getting it. 'Slow' doesn't have to mean sluggish or non-productive. It denotes a calm, peace and single tasking approach to the day without much outside distraction. It looks like your littles are taking to this set-aside day with welcoming arms.

Monica,
I was wondering, how do you manage to have a slow day and still get all the homeschooling done? Or do you cut back on your lessons that day?

If you wouldn't mind answering another question, I was also wondering about how you read aloud to the kids during mealtimes. Practically, how do you do this while being able to eat, too? We usually do this for our Bible reading in the morning, but many times I'm reading paragraphs between bites while feeding the baby in his highchair. :)

Thank you!

Heather :)

P.S. I LOVED your beauty post today--it's such a freeing thought to know that being who you are created to be will lead you to reflect Him!

Hi Heather!

Thanks for your comment. First, slow day doesn't really mean we slow our productivity. It truly just means we slow our outside activity, make time to embrace life that we may not take on other days, stay home, and enjoy being together.

So with that said, we have a regular day of school typically on slow day. We usually try to start by 9 and finish by lunch time.

As for reading aloud at meal times, here is how it works at our house:

I fix breakfast and we all sit down together, we pray and my children start eating - I don't eat yet at this point. I read a chapter or two from the Bible - we are reading chronologically through right now and then they practice their Awana verses for the next week. AFTER they finish all of that, I start eating. They are usually nearly done eating by then, so I have them clear their dishes, and begin their 3 morning chores (teeth brushed, bed made and clothes changed)

Since you mention having a baby - I wonder if you have an older child who could help you with this, a few cheerios that could occupy baby while you are reading or perhaps if you aren't eating yet - you could feed baby while reading? We've sort of evolved to this routine and I know exactly what works for us won't work for you - hope you will find a great rhythm in this.

At lunch, it is the same thing - I fix their lunch and read a chapter from a devotional book and then a chapter or two from our read aloud. Then, I eat and if they are done, they are free to play or I send them outside to play. They've just finished school so usually this is one of their best free play times each day.

Hope that helps some -

Have a great day!
Monica
