Twine Cross

Last time I was at Hobby Lobby, I found this styrofoam cross and knew it would be perfect for Easter inspiration! It was just a few dollars with a 40% off coupon. You could also use a piece of cardboard cut into a cross or probably even cut your own cross from styrofoam you may have on hand.

Anyway, all I used was this piece of foam, twine and hot glue.

Start by using short pieces to cover the ends that won't be covered when you wrap the twine around each arm of the cross. Glue these short pieces in place before you begin the wrapping of the twine.

Begin wrapping twine around each arm of the cross and glue ends in place:

Complete wrapping twine around each part of the cross until it looks like this:

Then, wrap twine in an "x" shape to fill in this square:

After you've completed your "x" shape - you may still have a little foam showing out. I cut very small pieces and hot glued them underneath the "x". You can see in the photo above that on the right side, I've already done this and there is no foam showing.

Hot glue a loop of twine to the back to hang your cross.

I really like how this turned out and love it just the way it is. However, I have contemplated making a crown of thorns and hanging a purple sash on it - would you leave it plain or make a couple of extra things to go with it?

This turned out great, Monica -- how much twine did it take (a whole roll or more)? Since I like things simple, I think I'd leave it as is, too. Love you, Mom

That is so neat, Monica.

I kind of like that it's plain, but I think you could try adding on those other pieces of the story and see how it looks.

I've been making a set of Resurrection eggs for us to use this year.

Maybe on Passover week put the crown of thorns, and sash on.

Beautiful the way it is but I do like the idea of the crown of thorns and sash on Good Friday.

That look really cool! I love "natural" looking decor. It looks so homey.
I'd leave it plain. There's something about crosses that are more stark and plain that (to me anyway) really invoke the spirit of the King humbling himself here on earth (I don't know that humbling is the right word, but I can't think of one that works better!)

Monica, Once again you have inspired me. I love it the way it is but think the idea of adding to it the closer we get to easter is a wonderful idea and great teachable moment for all who enter your home...ya just never know.

Thanks for sharing.

Love it, Monica! I really like the simplicity of it. I'm sure any special touches you might add would be just that. Thanks for sharing!

I like the rustic look of the cross; it brings "The Old Rugged Cross" to my lips. Love those old hymns!
I want to make one, but doubt I will be able to find a styrofoam cross. Wish there was a Hobby Lobby in my area...Can you give me the approximate dimensions. I think I will try to cut one out of foam board. Thank you.

I think I might try this with wooden crosses for my Jr. Church kids.
