Recommended Reading: Input Requested!

I'm itching to do some reading and don't know what to read! So, I'm hoping some of you have some good suggestions of books I can request from our library to keep me busy for a while! I am set on non-fiction ideas, so am looking for fiction suggestions.

I like Little House on the Prairie, Mitford and Christian fiction. Please share some of your favorites and I look forward to discovering lots of new books!

Bloom Swap!

I'm so excited to show you what my wonderful swap partner, Angie, sent me for the Bloom swap!

I mentioned that my colors for Spring this year were robin's egg blue, brown and black/white toile. She did a fabulous job going with those colors -

Everything was packed in this pretty box, see the cute Bloom letters?!
When I opened the lid, I saw this - isn't that creative to use a piece of fabric to wrap around everything!
Very pretty notecards, she made!Look at this cute Post-It holder:
I love this "family" key ring - I envision putting pictures of my family to keep handy in my purse or with my keys! She had wrapped everything with cute colored tags (paint samples in coordinating colors!) and used Scripture verses on lots of items. She really put a lot of effort into this box! Here you can see an egg shaped dish, robin egg gumballs (for use in decorating!), and candles! Some fun new sponges (I needed some!) with a verse about having a clean heart, baby lotion for Samuel, Bath and Body Works lotion for me, Aloe infused pink socks, some sprinkles for Ice Cream Sunday's (wow - you really pay attention, Angie! Emily has tried to claim these sprinkles for herself already!), and a spiral pad of fun colored papers! Some cute stickers for Emily and Rachel, and some for Mama! And, these great plant markers which I've been wanting to get some of!Look at this fabulous clip board! I think this may have been my favorite thing - I love it!
And, this cute pad of paper was on it - very fun! Angie, thank you - you put together a very fun box and went above and beyond in pouring yourself and your creativity into it.
Now, for what I sent to her! Her spring colors this year were cream, sage green and red. So, I went with that and re-did this birdcage I found thrifting about a year ago. I spray painted it, put a piece of toile wallpaper in the bottom. Painted a small pot and put the flowers in it. Then I ran a sage ribbon through the wires and tied a bow in front:Notecards:I made her a purse and Kleenex holder, wasn't this pretty fabric!?Also included were some seeds, a felt pouch that Carrie and I made while she was here, a lip gloss and some felt flowers to help her decorate a tree in her home for Spring! Thanks, Angie - for making this a fun swap!

Oatmeal Cream Cookies

I made these oatmeal cream pies this weekend! They are delish! Thanks, Elise, for sending me the recipe! Emily and Rachel love them too and Rachel keeps asking to have a "party" (meaning tea party) so she can have some more!

Chalk Family

The little ladies and I were recently playing outside with sidewalk chalk and we had fun creating our whole family on the driveway! Emily was so excited to show Daddy when he got home and he suggested we take pictures! Emily and Rachel laid down and let me trace around them - the rest of us are just drawn free-hand!

Family Night: Pillows, Pajamas, Popcorn!

I'm sure it goes without saying why we have not had a planned Family Night in a while! But, I have been feeling a draw to getting it going again. A week or so ago - I sat and wrote out a bunch of ideas for future Family Nights!

We were all ready for a night to just relax and be together and it was so nice! I made a big batch of popcorn, which I don't usually like - but it tasted good since we rarely have it. It was fun to serve it in these vintage popcorn containers I found last Fall! I slipped a quart sized Ziploc inside so I can reuse them.

We all got in our pj's, piled a bunch of pillows on the living room floor and snacked. We read, we laughed, we relaxed - it was perfect!

When Emily found out I was making popcorn, she exclaimed, "I LOVE popcorn! Pink popcorn!" Well, our popcorn was not pink - but it was cute that she was so excited!

Mama - your magazine is so much more fun than our toys or books!

Samuel Smiles!

Samuel smiled for the first time a couple of weeks ago, but we've had a hard time catching it on the camera - here are a couple I caught over the last few days:

The bottom photo reminds me so much of Emily when she was a baby - they look so much alike! Here is a photo of Emily at about 7 weeks:

Quiet Time: Follow-Up

I just realized that I have never followed up on what we're doing for Quiet Time. We tried several different things initially and nothing really worked out very well. In the end, we have simply put Rachel back in the crib only during naps. It has made the whole thing much more peaceful - both girls sleep and rest quietly and better - I am not getting stressed out or frustrated with them. When Samuel needs his crib during the day to nap - we'll have to revisit this again, but for now, it is working great!

Fashion Follow-Up

Wow! I never expected such a response to my post yesterday! I hope you get a chance to read through the comments - there is some great stuff there! In fact, so much that I'm planning a follow-up post and may even post some pix of the clothes I find if anyone is interested, Thanks for some great conversation, ladies!

Woman of Worth

I have some really exciting news! I will be creating craft projects and writing an article to go with to be featured in Woman of Worth magazine which is published four times a year! The article will include photos and instructions for completing each project. I have enjoyed perusing their web site and being encouraged in my journey toward being a Proverbs 31 woman!

As I was praying about this opportunity, God brought this idea to my mind: to walk through Proverbs 31 and create a project that reflects the idea or thoughts presented in each verse or series of verses.

I don't know about you, but I love Proverbs 31! And, I am excited to be on this journey of crafting a project to reflect the values presented here - I want to bring these values more into my home and life so what better way than by expressing my creativity to do so!

I'm not exactly sure when the first article will be featured, but will keep you posted ~ here is a photo of the first project (click to enlarge) and I'll update with directions and download after it has been printed.

I want to say one thing right up front ~ God is the one who has given me these gifts and is the one who inspires these projects. I want Him to receive the glory for this and use these projects for furthering His Kingdom and writing His word on our hearts! I am excited and humbled to be available to Him in this way.

Hope you'll see a project you want to make and that it will encourage you to become more like Him!

Drawing!

Mrs. Wilt is hosting a drawing for a gift certificate to Christa-Taylor! So, this post is entering me in a second chance!

Clothing: All my thoughts hung out on the line!

Ok, sorry for the pun! I couldn't resist! I've been thinking recently about clothing. And, about how it reflects on who I am: my personality, my values. But, this is an area I struggle with. I'm not really good at fashion - and shopping takes time which is a precious commodity to everyone.

Mrs. Wilt has been talking a lot about modesty lately. And, while I am definitely looking for clothing that is modest, I'm having a harder time finding clothing that I think reflects my personality. Some of the colors and styles I saw at the mall this week just won't work for me!

I find that I often settle for something I don't love or doesn't look super on me because I have to have something or just don't think I have the time to keep looking.

I'm sure that we all could name at least one way we think we are hard to fit - who goes in and just finds the perfect thing quickly that fits great, is flattering and a good style right off?!

I am not an advocate of comparing ourselves to others. But, when I was out with my littles one day last week at lunch - a bunch of moms came in from a Bible Study. I quickly noticed how they were dressed and how I felt, um, under dressed or under styled. Now, I am not saying this because I think I need to go out and spend tons of money on a super fashionable wardrobe. But, what I noticed about how they were dressed is that their clothing was so suited to each one of them. A couple of them I already knew by face/name and I was just really impressed by all the different clothing choices and how they were really fitting for each of the ladies. Their clothing added to who they were by the colors that looked good on them or a style that was flattering (lest you think they were all in perfectly coordinated outfits, one mom was wearing jeans and a t-shirt - but it still looked great!) I certainly could not have said that about myself that day.

All of this got me to thinking - why am I not more intentional about my clothing? Why do I settle for something less than best? And, so I am purposing to be more careful about my purchases making sure that they fit my criteria.

What is my criteria?
* Modest
* Feminine
* Comfortable
* Flattering color and style (I like the vintage look, I know - big surprise! But, I find that I'm occasionally drawn to other things as well - a variety is fine!)
* Affordable

Now, while I am looking for clothing that is affordable, I will say that I do think there will come a time where paying a little more would be worth it. When clothing that fits all of the above is hard to find - sometimes it will be worth paying a bit more to achieve these goals.

I'd love to hear from you on this!

Where do you purchase your clothing? I'm really interested in learning about new sources because the traditional department store often isn't my style. I love this one that Mrs. Wilt shared!

Do you have your clothing altered to fit when you find something you like? For someone petite like me where even petites are too long waisted, I have had things altered in the past but it has been a long time. Maybe I should revisit this.

What are your standards or criteria when looking for clothing?

My Mom was just telling me about a lady in their city who does personal shopping. She takes into account your size, colors, style and goes shopping for you. All you have to do is go to the dressing room and try on what she has picked out to make decisions. Seriously, that sounds like it would be worth doing at least once, think of all you could learn from an experience like this! Have any of you ever tried this?

Any ideas on developing our own sense of fashion? What is right for our personality, body size, budget, colors, etc...

Ok, please share all the scoop on how you choose clothing. I'd love to hear your thoughts.

In addition to everything mentioned above, I know that the way I dress reflects on my husband, sets an example (positive or negative) for my children, and ultimately may affect someone's opinion of Christ. This is certainly not an area to be taken lightly!

Fun Thrifting!

Saturday afternoon I had a special treat! I got to go out to a couple of thrift stores by MYSELF! It was so great! And, I found some great treasures - so of course wanted to share. Isn't it always more fun to find goodies when you have someone to share the joy with?!

My first stop was Goodwill where I found:

A vintage pillowcase
Two Shabby Chic pillow shams
A pretty bed skirt that I was instantly inspired to make into a picnic table covering! More on this when I get it done!
A few clothing items for myself

Here's the scoop on the pillow shams. When I bought them I thought I'd make them into cute baby blankets and give them as gifts. But, before I got home I had a new idea! I recently read about mistreatments for window coverings. This was a new word and idea to me - having never heard mention of it before.

Emily and Rachel's window before:

Gathered pillow shams and a couple of other stray things from my fabric pile, some weighted cord and some curtain clips from Ikea:
Utilized my pinking shears, some safety pins and a chair to stand on. Here's the outcome:Professional? Certainly not. But, the girls love it and I'm actually pleased with how it turned out considering I did two windows for less than $5 and in less than 2 hours!

After Goodwill, I headed to Salvation Army where I also found some great treasures:

Some neat old baseballs which I immediately put in a jar I found on clearance at World Market for Samuel's room:I was inspired by this ice ring, not so much for creating artistic ice, but for making centerpieces with it. Something in the ring - something in the middle - oh, the possibilities are endless:

An old cheese grater. Junk Market gals suggest placing a candle inside and making a lantern out of it!

Cheese board and dome ($1!) - not for cheese, my friends - I envision painting the wood, creating something pretty and covering it with the glass jar!

Yes, it was a great afternoon! And - look what came in the mail on the same day?!

Mitford Moments

It's been a while since we visited Mitford - here are some more thoughts on bringing Mitford home to our real lives:

* Visit people in the hospital!
* Cut flowers from our yard and share with others.
* Share out of the abundance of our blessings.
* Remember birthdays and make them a day that honors the special person!
* Appreciate life's simple pleasures: Father Tim loves seeing jars of canned tomatoes!
* I love the motto, "Mitford Takes Care of Its Own!" Think about what that would mean if we lived that way.

BBQ Chicken Pizza

Here's a super easy meal I made the other night, enjoy!

1 loaf frozen bread dough, thawed
BBQ Sauce
1 c. cooked, diced chicken
2 c. shredded Mozzarella cheese

Press dough into desired pan. Top with BBQ sauce to taste. Cover with chicken and top with cheese. Bake at 425 until starting to brown. Yummy!

Clean Heart Part Fifteen

Does the way I physically care for myself reflect a clean heart?

God's Word reminds me that my body is a temple where His Holy Spirit dwells. Therefore, it is important to God that I take care of myself and in turn do what I can to encourage this in my family too.

* Physical Activity: I've never really been one who likes to exercise. I do love to take walks though. What about my children? Am I allowing them to languish in front of the TV rather than encouraging them to play outside? I hardly sit down before lunch most days and I confess that I do consider this a form of my exercise. Housework and running after two energetic ladies should definitely qualify as exercise right now!

Action:
* I'd like to start walking at least once a week with all three littles. And, after making that a routine - add in another day and so on as it is manageable. So far, it has not seemed manageable to start this!
* Encourage activity for the girls - go to the park, do jumping jacks in the living room, dance together, do our ballet DVD together, play outside. Be diligent about our 30 minute TV time limit in the mornings.

* Grooming: I'm not as strict as the Fly Lady suggests in this area since I rarely wear shoes around the house, but I am a practicer and believer in getting dressed and presentable every day. Yes - if I'm not feeling well, I make an exception. And, lately - I've spent a great deal of time in pj's (bed rest, new baby, etc...) I have found that I am significantly more productive when I'm clean, wearing clean clothes that I feel good in and with a little bit of makeup on and my hair fixed. I generally accomplish this every morning before I get the girls up. I feel that it teaches them also, the importance of caring for ourselves and it is a blessing to my husband as well. If I were out working all day every day and came home consistently to a spouse in pj's who looked like they just rolled out of bed - I'd probably wonder what they really do all day. I know, though, that in spite of my goal - there are a couple of things I need to work on in this area.

Action:
* Establish routines for known areas of weakness.
* Take Emily to get her hair cut (I have been putting this off and putting this off because I don't know what I want them to do or where to go. Suggestions?)
* Assess clothing and acquire needed new items. Be watching for a post on clothing later this week.

* Eating Habits: Ouch - this one is harder for me. I love the *idea* of eating healthier, choosing organic when possible and cultivating better habits in this area. But, I must admit that I'm aware of the real costs of eating healthier, the challenge to find good products that are readily available, the challenge of getting my children to eat these healthier things, compromising taste and the knowledge that by God's grace we don't struggle with our weight or health and the caution to be aware of this. Living in a smaller community, it is harder to come by the quality and quantity of healthier foods. We don't have Wild Oats, Whole Foods or Trader Joe's! I also find it somewhat overwhelming to realize how many things there are to steer clear of and how many foods those ingredients appear in. A few things I think we're doing right: cook and bake from scratch; eat at home; start introducing organic as we can - milk is very well established in this area; we don't snack between meals either.

Action:
* Continue to increase fresh produce in our menus.
* Actively work at reducing undesirable ingredients in foods we eat. Look for easy switches to start off with. (For example: instead of buying regular ketchup with high fructose corn syrup - I recently bought organic which did not have HFCS in it. A small switch - but baby steps...)
* I recently found out about a local organic farm that delivers fresh produce to a store in my area twice a month. I'm considering signing up to receive a box. If I do this I'll be posting what I get and how we ate it for accountability!
* Plant a garden and use organic fertilizer. Done!
* Make Granola. Done!
* Become a label reader. Working on this...

* Rest: Another hard one for me. I am a driven and very hard worker, always pushing to get one more thing done before I sit down. But, if I refuse to take time to rest, I will have less and less to give. Nap time is my refuge. Crafting, reading, watching a movie, catching up with a friend, blogging, etc...

Action:
* Continue to invest in fun outlets for myself - do a craft or work on my blog during nap time.
* Choose to rest so that I have more to give my family.

Ok, let's hear your thoughts on all this!

Junk Beautiful

I was recently given the opportunity to receive a copy of this book and write a review here for all of you! Since I already am a fan of the Junk Market gals - I was really excited to get to do this! I don't know about you - but when my Country Home arrives, there are a couple of regular features I'm excited to see right off and the projects these ladies come up are always high on my list!

I decided that there would be no better way to review the book than to actually try one of their projects myself. And, after a quick look through the book - I knew immediately what I wanted to start with.

Let me preface this by saying - David has always hated our paper towel holder. Why? Because every time he'd try to get a paper towel, the whole thing would come down. I never seemed to have this problem - but it never worked right for him. It's not like I was attached to the one we had - it was here when we moved in! Here it is:

I chose to make a new paper towel holder because of the above mentioned frustration and because I already had everything I needed to make it! I know this will cause some of you to roll your eyes - I mean how many people have an old (vintage looking) croquet mallet in their shed just waiting to make it into a paper towel holder?! Well, I did! I got four of them for $1 each several years ago at the Paris Street Market, a very fun event by the way!

I found a piece of scrap wood and cut it in half. Then I stapled the bottom edges together to make a flat surface to rest the mallet on. I spray painted the whole thing black and sanded the edges to distress it a little. I also trimmed the handle of the mallet, so it wasn't so long!

Then I used Gorilla Glue to hold the mallet onto the base and then nailed it on tight with nails underneath. I topped off the unfinished cut on the handle with a button just nailed on.

Here is the finished project:

That night, David needed a paper towel and instead of offering to get one for him - I suggested he be the first to try this out! He loved it, he said, "much better!" with a sigh of relief in his voice.

This book is filled with lots of great ideas for using things in creative ways. Each chapter includes the story of a family who had a problem room/area in their home and called these ladies in to help them out. Often they added on space to the home and in each case, the transformation was dramatic. While I won't be adding on to a room in my home or re-doing it to the degree that they show in each of the chapters, my favorite things are gleaning the small scale ideas.

I have bookmarked many pages with ideas I'd like to incorporate in our home in the future. A couple of favorites are making a children's art display out of old windows and serving chips in a tambourine!

Now, a natural response to this is, "where do you find the junk?" And, I will admit that it is a response I have myself. Their junk is so neat and full of character! And, they definitely know where to find it. A couple of places I know I can check are thrift stores and the Habitat for Humanity Restore. I don't know of flea markets or junk barns near me - but it sure would be fun to visit one! I'm guessing that this is one of those things where you just have to keep your eyes open and be willing to be inspired by something that doesn't look inspiring at the time.

I think the overall tone of the book is to help us think differently about items and show us ideas of how to reuse them in different ways. It has a very can-do attitude and theme throughout. I'm not nearly as tool-savvy as these gals are - but I still felt like I could do it if I really put my mind to it because of their encouragement.

Do you have something old in your home that is being used in a new unconventional way? I'd love to hear your own junk creation stories - and hope you will get a chance to look at this book and be inspired as well!
