A Dreamy Thanksgiving Part One

Wednesday and Thursday of Thanksgiving week were so fun! I was in crafty, decorating, styling, cooking heaven! And, since it is still November - it seems to be too early to talk about Christmas stuff or maybe it is just an excuse to keep going with Fall!

Either way - here are some pictures of our Thanksgiving celebration:

Thankful for You Breakfast:
I made our traditional Thanksgiving breakfast and had so much fun making it pretty and sharing it with a sweet friend and her family! I took a ridiculous number of photos of her breakfast :)

And, we enjoyed the same breakfast!

After breakfast, I made pumpkin pie and made it cute with inspiration from here:

Ok, one more thing for today and then I'll finish up tomorrow. Have you figured out yet that we ate outside?! This is something I've been wanting to do for several years but for one reason or another it hasn't worked out. Yippee! It did this year! And, I loved every minute of it!

I moved out this rocking chair from our screened in porch and earlier in November, I made a little pillow {with leftover drop cloth and a Sharpie} via this inspiration.

More tomorrow!

November 21st

Yesterday was one of those memorable dates for our family as it was three years ago that my Dad received his cancer diagnosis. I am so thankful to say that he is doing well and his doctors are very pleased with his response to treatments. We are so grateful for how God has blessed us in this.

And, I unexpectedly picked up the phone yesterday morning to be asked if this was a parent of Samuel Xxxxxx. It was the eye doctor's office - {gasp} this was the moment where I'd find out the results from the MRI. She quickly stated who she was and that everything came back normal on his MRI.

To say that we are thankful and relieved is obvious. And, yet - I know that so many others do not always receive good news. Our family has not always received good news and I want to be careful not to flaunt our good news forgetting how others (or even us) have felt when we weren't on the receiving end of good news.

It was a blessing to have some good news come on November 21st and to receive Samuel's results so quickly. A very big heartfelt thank you to all who have supported, encouraged and prayed! You are a blessing!

Cookie Dough Memories

I saw this post linked on a friends Facebook page and if you scroll waaay down you'll some cookie baking photos. It is hard to explain how those photos hit me.

The first thing I thought of is that I have never given my kids a bowl of cookie dough and allowed them to scoop out the balls of dough themselves. I've only allowed them to help in a very um, controlled environment, shall we say. Usually this means that I let them help pour in the ingredients and then I scoop the dough or I scoop the dough and then they do the decorating or something like that.

Why on earth have I never let them just scoop the dough? Don't answer that - there are practical reasons galore for why I have never done this and one reason is probably also that I just didn't think of it. But, now that I was thinking - I could not get it out of my head.

So, dough was made and scooped by little hands ~ and the entire thing went off without incident! And, yes - of course it was tasted too.

Until ... it was my turn. Ahem - I knocked a nearly full bag of M&M's to the floor. Yes, we picked them up - no, they did not make it on the cookies. We'll just eat them plain thankyouverymuch.

Am I the only one who controls kitchen help? Do you let little hands scoop dough? I will definitely do this again, now that I'm aware of the fact that I'm the one who bears watching in the kitchen.

MRI Reflection

Dear Samuel,

This morning (Nov. 17) Daddy lifted you out of bed in the wee hours of the morning as we got ready to drive to the hospital. You didn't understand - but were actually fairly pleasant in spite of that. Daddy carried your little jammied body out to the car and we were on our way. The usual route looked so different in the dark and before so many had woken up for the day, but you just snoozed off and on and were peaceful and content.

It struck me then, that you trust Daddy & Mama. You did not question what was going on or why you were even in the car at this crazy hour. You did not wonder where the girls were or ask for anything to eat. You just closed your sleepy eyes and slept.

You started to wake up just as we pulled into the parking garage at the hospital. And, I think you were hoping to see some airplanes since that is usually what you see when we are in a parking garage. We gathered our things and wondered which way was best into this massive complex in front of us. And, we ended up asking a couple of nurses who were on their way in for the morning shift.

Turns out, we were a long walk from the place we needed to be - but I did not mind carrying you most of the way. I was just so glad to snuggle with you as if I could ease what I knew was coming by cuddling and loving on you.

We found the check in desk and you were startled by the big doors that whooshed open when you got too close to them. After being charged only $30 (so far) for a $5000 procedure and enjoying the friendliness of Miss Linda at the front desk - we were directed to the waiting room.

Soon, we were led to another waiting room - one that said MRI over the doors. It was a peaceful green color inside and you were excited because Playhouse Disney was on the TV! You enjoyed watching your little show for a bit before it was our turn.

I watched other waiting mamas and children and wondered about those who live their lives like this. But, it also reminded me that I would do absolutely anything for you - even if it was something like this to help you see better.

Your doctor wanted you to have this visit at the hospital so a special machine could take special pictures of your head and inside your head. And, you were so very brave.

Next, it was your turn. We were led back by a sweet nurse, Miss Jennifer. She has a little boy who just turned four and he is getting ready to have a little brother. I liked her immediately. Then, we met Nurse Susan - she was like a grandma and was so sweet both to you and me.

You were excited about the red wagon full of toys and the movie playing quietly. You were very interested in the mouse who was eating off of a plate in the movie! But, you weren't too excited about the little things that got hooked on to you - things that made sure your heart was happy and gave your arm big hugs.

Oh, you were so polite even when you did not like things! You said, "no thank you" to the nurse several times when you did not like what she was doing. We got a smile out of this and I said you should get an 'A' for manners!

But, then there was the poke. And, a second poke. Oh dear, it was not going well getting your medicine into your body. Those nurses commented on how strong you were! Your little fist was fighting so hard that they could not get the IV in properly. So, you got a little drink of medicine to help you relax a little bit. You got to hold the plastic fire truck you'd been anxious to get a hold of and watch some more of the adventures with the "mouse."

Finally after the fifth (ouch!) poke, you were set and got a special little "surf board" on your arm with lots of tape. Oh, yes - you let the nurses know you DID NOT like band-aids. You never have. Actually, you hate those things! You did not want the little bracelet (hospital i.d.) and you did not want the surf board thingy holding the medicine transporter on to you hand.

I snuggled you up to your Sparky and scooped you up as they let me carry you into the special room where you would get these special pictures taken of your head. I could feel the machine pulling on my earrings and drawing me closer to it. I told you it looked like a cool space ship and laid you down on the bed.

You were so curious about this crazy thing you were laying in and were trying to look all around. But, you did not seem afraid - just wondering. It only took 2 or 3 seconds after they gave you some more medicine and you just fell right asleep. The nurse told me you were out and said to give you a kiss. I was happy to obey her!

Daddy and I sat in the waiting room while you were in that space ship looking thing. I wanted to cry because it was so hard to watch the numerous pokes you had to endure. And, to see the other children coming in for their turn behind you.

I had brought a book to read, but all I could do was sit and think of you. I rubbed my hand on your Sparky and noticed that Chuggington was on TV - you would've loved it. I told Daddy that I was so glad he had been with me because I did not think I could have endured that ordeal without him.

It was a long and a short 30 minutes. And, then it was time to come and help you wake up. This proved to be harder than I thought it would be. You just wanted to curl up in a ball and sleep right there on the green plastic hospital bed for a long time it appeared. And, no amount of bribing you with anything worked. The nurse said you should have a quiet day, a "movie day." I told her she was going to be your new best friend if she wanted you to watch movies all day since I knew you would love that. Honestly, it did not hold too much appeal for you right then.

You were pretty upset when you woke up and very feisty. It was a loooooonger walk back to the car (especially for Daddy who was carrying you) because you weren't very cooperative. But, when we got back to the car - you seemed to be feeling a little better. Daddy offered you a cookie which you gladly accepted. And, you enjoyed the Capri Sun that the nurse gave you.

Since then, you have been so good. You have not complained or cried. You asked to go to Chick-fil-A for lunch and we did. Of course, we don't know any results from your test yet. That will come later. For now, I am just relieved that this part is behind us.

I can see your still small precious self laying on that huge machine. The dim light and the clean smell making it seem like another planet. And, I see everyone else just going about their daily things as if nothing all that interesting is happening today. But, to me - today was huge. It was a big unknown and I was nervous for me and for you.

Samuel - I just want to remember these things I am feeling and seeing right now. To tuck these away in my memory and for you in the future. So you will catch a glimpse of how very much I love you and how proud I am of you. Today you were very brave and such a good big boy.

I love you!!!!!
Mama

PS: I took these pictures of the leaves in our back yard when we got home - it was a beautiful drive all the way home from the hospital and I was itching to preserve a piece of it.

To See Like My Savior: When Nothing Has Changed

Well, it's been a while since I wrote anything on this topic - but this morning it seems appropriate. As you are reading this (if you're up early enough) we're headed to a children's hospital an hour away for Samuel to have an MRI. (Note: I'll post an update at some point, but imagine it will be a week or two before we have any results.)

Since I last shared about his vision here - we've gotten glasses, been back for a check up and even been for a second opinion. Truthfully, nothing has changed yet. And, it is easy to feel discouraged when things are not helping the way we had hoped. So, at the encouragement of our doctor - Samuel is having an MRI to make sure nothing else is going on to cause his vision problems. If it is clear {as we are hoping and praying} then the doctor will know how to proceed in treating his vision.

It can be so discouraging to think we're doing everything right - putting his glasses on him, putting the drops in his eyes, taking him for his check-ups and then to find that things aren't going the way his doctors had hoped.

And, you know what? I've felt kind of like this spiritually lately. When I feel like I am still struggling with things that have been hanging around a long time.

It's true for my heart and it is true for Samuel's eyes - all I can do is walk in what God is showing us to do. To continue to be consistent in treatment - for me, spending time in His Word and for Samuel to continue being faithful in putting on his glasses and remembering his eye drops.

For both of us, there is a certain fear of something hidden being found out. What will an MRI show? What does God truly see in my heart?

It also reminds me of a verse that has been meaningful to me lately:

"We live by faith, not by sight." ~ 2 Corinthians 5:7

So, even when it seems like nothing has changed (living by sight) - I can be confident that He is aware and that placing my faith in Him (living by faith) is a much better use of my energy!

How do you walk by faith instead of sight?

PS: Thank you all so much for your sweet comments yesterday! I smiled, I cried and I felt hugged. You are the best and I am so thankful for the gift of friendships with each of you!

On feeling small, ...

... wanting to be heard and known and the green-eyed monster.

How's that for a title? I had to divide it up to even make it fit right! And, here comes the part where I just admit that these are things that have been on my heart lately. Truthfully, it is not all pretty - but I'm ready to admit and learn from it and move forward and I'm sort of betting that I'm not the only one who has felt some of these things - so here goes ...

Confession: sometimes I look at other bloggers who are making a BIG impact or who have a BIG influence and I feel very small. Sometimes I feel left out. I look at the ways God is using them and wish it were me. And, I look at them gathering {with a little jealousy} and wish I was missed.

I told you this wasn't pretty and I'm sad that these thoughts have even crossed my mind - but if I'm honest - they have.

I sit at lunch with my littles and wish I could tell someone that Samuel is having an MRI tomorrow {more on this tomorrow} and I'm nervous about it. And, I realize that I am just like a little child who says the same thing over and over until they know they are heard. Although, sometimes I'm just saying it over and over to myself in my head.

A friend who always looks so pretty has me longing to be prettier or more fashionable.

And, then on a day when I least expect it - God reminds me that I made a mom smile today and asked a few others how they were and listened. And, I was reminded of this. He reminds me that there aren't big and small in His employ - just faithful and unfaithful. He reminds me that I have spent time snuggling and reading stories and fulfilling little childish requests just to serve my children.

Oh, how I want to be among the faithful! Faithful in whatever He has provided me to do whether it be big or small. And, by the way - how am I measuring big or small - in man's economy or in God's? Ahem.

I am reminded of a time when I was working at Glen Eyrie - I was the Guest Services Manager - a job I had not asked for or sought. And, honestly - a job I wasn't enjoying all that much. I loved parts of it - but felt like I was putting out fires all the time. So, I was open and talked with my supervisors about how I was struggling. {Note: this is a benefit of the relationships I had and of the fact that this was a Christian organization!}

My supervisors came back with three or four options of other things that they thought might be a good fit still at Glen Eyrie. And, I remember driving over to Garden of the Gods one day and just really seeking the Lord about what He wanted me to do whether there or somewhere else. And, I will never forget the answer - as I processed all the things I enjoyed, felt good at, giftings, etc... I sensed so clearly that God had wired me to make others lives easier.

I remember telling this to my boss' wife much later - about how God showed me that making his life easier was what He had for me in that time. Doing what I was asked to do without complaint as much as possible, looking for ways of easing without always having to be told, organizing and being diligent and just being faithful in the work provided.

And, you know - I think it is still true today. I serve my husband and family to make their lives happier and easier {more peaceful} - but this does not mean that I am not teaching my children to work! It means that I do not set them up for failure but try to think through what would set them up for success.

Is Emily capable of the chore I'm going to ask her to do? Are my expectations realistic?

For others too - I love to catch little ideas in what others say of ways to bless or encourage them and then do it! Someone mentions a really busy day - can I bring dinner? And all of a sudden, when He reminds me of these things - I consider it an honor to serve Him in this way! Supporting, encouraging, serving, loving.

Here is the bottom line: I must be myself. My mom has always been SO good at reminding me to be true to myself, and be who God made me to be.

Let that sink in: God made me to be each of the things I am. And, if I'm so busy comparing or wishing for something other than who I am - I will miss out on so much. I will really miss the calling and opportunities that God has for me.

I'll close with this Scripture and please be reminded that I am processing and speaking to myself here most of all. I am not in any way pointing a finger at anyone else. If anything, I am preaching to my own heart and mind to hear the truths of these words.

Be encouraged. Be faithful in His calling to you. No matter how small - it is not lost in God's eyes.

Colossians 3:23-24,
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving."

Ideas

Oh, ideas are delicious to me! I guess I'm an idea-junkie! What about you? I love Pinterest, magazines, blogs and really any source of ideas!

But, I'm not content to just collect ideas - I love to try them! I've even started a Pinterest section for pinned ideas that I have tried. And, thought it would be fun to share that here a little too! Here are the ideas I've seen and tried in the past few weeks.

As I put this collection together just now, I realized that I only spent about $5 to make all of these. All the rest of the supplies came from scraps or things I already had. For example, I made the tablecloth out of leftovers from my slip covers. I bought some twine and paid for a few copies to be made and that's it! I think it is fun to see an idea and then make it my own or see how inexpensively I can make it.

How about you? Do you collect ideas or make an effort to try and make some of them?

Staying Home

Once in a while, life has a way of slowing down or, should I say, slowing us down. When I worked in a school office - I saw snow days this way. It was an unexpected gift of slowing down that God gave in not-too-frequent intervals.

I haven't had a snow day in years, but last week - we experienced a different kind of slowing. Sickness. Personally, I'd rather have a snow day any time than sickness - but there were blessings that have outweighed the inconveniences.

Out of all of us, only Rachel and I were sick and we had two completely different things. So, blessing number one was that three of our family stayed well. Yes, that is a huge blessing!

The blessing of having time to rest, read, do nothing but get well.

The biggest blessing of all came as I realized that I did not go anywhere from dinner time Saturday night until lunch time on Thursday. Let that one sink in. I remember when I was single and, again, working in the school office - when I had time off for Spring Break or something, I would try to see how many days I could make it without going anywhere.

How often do I get to stay home for several days in a row and just enjoy the pleasures of being home? It has been a gift - and David was a huge help in making that a reality. Which reminds me of this quote from Jane Austen:

“Ah! There is nothing like staying at home, for real comfort.”

Running out of energy faster than usual, requiring more rest - these things have reminded me to prioritize what needs to be done. What do I really need to be spending my limited energy on?

We had school, meals were fixed and home needs cared for as energy allowed. But, I did not have a to-do list. I just worked as the energy was there. I rested as the energy faded. I have read six books in the last week!

This learning to slow, to prioritize, to realize that doesn't really have to be done right now. To cease hurry and to stay home. This is where the true gift has been for me.

When was the last time you got to spend a concentrated amount of time at home? How would that bless you now?

Scripture Adventures: Give Thanks

Have you ever heard of Scripture Adventures? I've known about them for a while and have been on their e-mail list. But, I'd never purchased anything until a few days ago.

I bought this Thanksgiving study to enjoy over the next few years around Thanksgiving. It looks like the kind of thing that we can grow with for a while considering we're still on the young side of things.

This study includes Thanksgiving history, poems, hymns, projects and recipes! As I've printed my copy off - I've been excited to get started! And, imagine that I'll enjoy this as much as my children will! We started on Wednesday and have had fun already!

You can go here to download sample pages from the Give Thanks study. The study is only $7 and you download and print it out at your own convenience.

I'm excited to see that they also have a study for Advent, Easter and things we could use for Bible during our homeschool time. Lots to explore here.

I wrote Scripture Adventures and asked if they'd be willing to host a giveaway to one of you and they graciously agreed to give the Give Thanks study to two of you!

If you'd like to win a copy - please leave a comment on this post letting me know which study looks most interesting to you. Become a fan of Scripture Adventures on Facebook for a second entry - come back here and let me know you liked them. Comments will be open until Saturday November 12th at 10pm EST.

Disclaimer: I bought my own copy of Give Thanks from Scripture Adventures and loved it and thought you would too. So, I asked them if they'd be willing to host the giveaway. I'm not receiving any compensation and all opinions are my own.

Twine Candle Holders

I saw this idea in the latest issue of Country Living and knew I wanted to try it! I especially wanted to try it in my Giving Thanks jars ~ I have shared about these before, but they are just so wonderful and beautiful I am sharing them again!

I love that you can make it say Thanks Giving or Giving Thanks and I fill them with different things and leave them out all year. You can frequently find twine at the dollar store - I found this twine at Wal-Mart, and stacked two on top of each other with a beeswax taper!

Here's how mine look right now - all ready for the Thanksgiving table!
