Homespun Bath Mat

We've had a rug in our bathroom for a few years that I really like. However, it says it is not supposed to be washed {who makes a bathroom rug that cannot be washed?!} Of course, I have washed it - but it has started to smell strange probably from everything that I just wrote in the last two sentences. And, I'm on a mission to use what I have rather than buy something new so I came up with this new bath mat.

I started with a spare towel. I cut it down to the size I wanted by measuring it on the existing rug size. Then I pieced together the top just from fabric I found in my scraps.

The fabrics were not quite dark enough for my taste so I put the whole top down in a pot of double strength coffee to dye it a bit more. The above photo is the "before coffee" photo. After the coffee, I ran it through the washer and dryer and then ironed it and stitched the two layers together. Pretty quick and simple. Now, it will slide around as a rug since it is just on a towel. I have ours next to the tub so it stays put a little better.

Best part - it was completely free using what I had on hand and it can easily be tossed in the washer/dryer! Inspired by this.

I love this! Saw a similar idea in one of Soule Mama's books a while back and have wanted to create one ever since! Also have that same mat pinned.

We recently purchased memory foam mats for the bathrooms. They say they can be washed and I'm interested to see how they hold up. Our mats need regular washings, for sure.

I have a towel to use for this project so hope to make one soon!

Great idea! I have some towels I was about to pitch, but they'll be great for this. I'll also be saving my husband's dress shirts as the cuffs and necks wear out to use for this. Your resourcefulness is always an inspiration.
