Family Night: Recycled Art

A fun school project for us has been working on a flower to "plant" in the gardens in a nearby neighborhood. We were to use only recycled items in creating this flower and the girls really did a great job with this!

We used a container from four tomatoes for the center of our sunflower. Coke cans were cut apart and painted for the petals and leaves and a tomato stake in our shed was the stem! The cost was absolutely zero and we had fun doing it - I was amazed at how easy it was to cut the aluminum cans with regular scissors!

All of this reminded me of when I was a child and my Great-Grandpa whom we called "Pa" used to make some kind of twirly thing out of soda cans that they always had hanging on their balcony when we went to visit. I'm not sure it was exactly like this as that was a loooong time ago! But, here is something I did make in honor of the memory! {After consulting my Mom, it is not the same, but it was still fun to make some little thing in his memory.}

I had hoped we could go to the Art Show on Friday night and see all the projects - but alas, I had strep the last half of the week and was recovering. Still glad we could participate!

Great job to the crew of artists! The flower turned out so cute. I'd forgotten about those things at Pa's.

Glad you're feeling better.

This craft is timely for Earth Day. Was the art night held in your neighborhood park. and were they all contributuons from residents? i love how some neighborhoods/developments have activities for the residents.
Over the weekend, Hanna planted some seeds in egg shells. Guy planted a blackberry bush and some bulbs that I bought at Aldi. And some hosta given to me by a friend. We still have so much open space on our mulch beds, so I love how prolific hosts are.

Love it! They looked great for Earth Day and were a great testimony to the joy we have knowing "the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof!" :) Would love to do one of these for our backyard in San Diego. May need pointers!

I too had forgotten about the nedbasmo whirligig thing Pa had made for their balcony. Bless you for thinking of it! He would be so pleased! Love you, Grandma/Nana
