Celebrating Spring

If you are like me, you grew up enjoying Easter egg hunts, chocolatey baskets of goodies waiting on the breakfast table, new dresses, and all that fun stuff!

I have happy memories of those things and wanted to be able to pass those fun things on to my children - but I felt so conflicted about them being associated with Easter.

Then, I read about Shannon's solution to have a First Day of Spring party and do all this sugary and fun stuff that day. We did this last year and it was a huge success! Now, we are eager for a repeat this Friday!

For some reason David had the day off last year and I asked him if he wanted us to wait until Saturday this year so he could participate with us (he's been talking about it all year!) but instead he decided to take the day off again this year so we could celebrate on the actual day!

Here's what I'm planning:

* Bunny Biscuits
* Baskets filled with treats and goodies
* Egg hunt
* Dyeing eggs
* Spring-themed lunch
* watch Easter Carol (Veggie Tales)

Here are the pictures of our party last year and a fun craft for you to make! Want to join us? I'd love to hear about your Spring parties as well!

Monica, what a great idea to incorporate the fun stuff you grew up with associated with Easter. I had wanted to do the same when our kids were little, but when them to grow up knowing the real reason of the season and not associate it with bunnies and eggs. Uggh, why didn't I ever think of this??
Enjoy your first day of spring with your family. Sounds like it will be fun.

What a great idea! I have the same issue trying to separate the "commercialness" of the holidays. I think we will do this next year when my little guys are a little older and able to undertand. I did make the garland for my mantle and everyone has commented on it. It was even a great conversation started for a neighbor who doesn't know quite what to believe in. Thanks for your great ideas!

We also celebrated spring for the first time last year and did much of the same things as you. I made bunny shaped cinnamon rolls, an egg hunt, dyed eggs, painted their faces, and then packed a picnic and headed out to a park for lunch and feeding some ducks. It was a fun day for us and we are planning to repeat it again, but we are doing it on Saturday. Last year, Easter came the same weekend as spring's arrival, so it's nice to have them more separate this year!

Enjoy your day, as I'm sure you will!

A few years ago we started this tradition only on the day before Easter Sunday. The baskets are hidden, eggs are colored and fun is had by all on Saturday. We refer to this day as "secular" Easter. Then Sunday is Resurrection Day set apart for the Savior. It extends the celebration of Christ's resurrection and we all love it.

Thank you, Monica, for sharing what you do to celebrate Spring. Just the other day hubby and I were talking, and I mentioned this idea which has been floating in my head since I read it on Shannon's blog last year. We both loved the idea, but so much has been going on that we haven't had time to really plan much out yet. Your ideas look so doable. We may pull this off this year yet!

Hi Monica! I finally figured out our 1st Day of Spring plans! :) We are going to color eggs as well...I saw on Martha Stewart a long time ago where you put sticker letters on the eggs and then dye them and then after they dry remove the letters...! I thought that would be neat with the kiddos names etc...we are going to make spring-y cupcakes with fruit candy slices shaped like flowers/butterfly's, and do a little "spring globe" craft from familyfun.com...if the weather is nice and cooperative, hubby is going to try to fly kites with the kids...anyway, thanks for the inspiration! :)

What a great idea. I'm a little sad that I just read about it today, since technically the first day of Spring ended 17 minutes ago. There's always next year, right?
Maybe I can use this idea to help wean the grandparents off of the secular Easter celebration.
